A group of German researchers have found a way to turn any part of the body into a tactile interface for mobile applications


Called "multi-touch leather", the material can be applied on paper or plastic sheets by means of a printer, the resulting surface functioning as a tactile interface, capable of interpreting multiple commands at the same time

Without being constrained to a particular shape, the prints conceal a network of electrodes connected to a side signal processor, the resulting sensor being glued to clothing or directly onto the skin. Used with other smart gadgets, "multi-touch skin" can serve as an auxiliary touchscreen, serving functions such as adjusting the volume, scrolling through the message list, and answering calls.

At the prototype stage, technology could be improved for better miniaturization and wireless connection to the devices we want to control.
