Android Wear Cuts the Creek for Ancient CPUs

Qualcomm's latest smartwatch chip is now two years old. The Wear 2100 is still manufactured in a 28nm process. If a more modern transistor manufacturing process were used, the chip could be smaller, more powerful, and still less battery-intensive. This certainly plays a role in smartwatches, which are often criticized because of their low battery life.

So it came that Apple could put itself at the top of the smartwatch market. Apple has Samsung in addition to its own development department for processors. Add to that Huawei, whose team has so far developed only smartphone SoCs. Google seems to be slowly building up a SoC department, but still there is only the Pixel Visual Core built into it in Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.
