The French ARCHOS brand has officially entered the Romanian market. After announcing two entry-level tablets, the company pulled out the "crown pearl" - the Diamond Omega smartphone. Is a smartphone designed by Nubia (Z17s), with Snapdragon 835 processor and 8GB of RAM (yes, you've read well!) A solid alternative to high-end smartphones at affordable prices from well-known brands? We will find out in the following lines.
Made from premium materials, Diamond Omega rivals this chapter with high-end high-end models, although it costs significantly less. The side frame is made of aluminum-painted phone color (Aurora Blue), and the back of the glass is curved on all edges. The front is covered with curved glass and slightly at the edges. It's about Gorilla Glass, but the manufacturer does not specify which version. The display has no side edges, and up and down these are very narrow. This model comes with an unusual 17: 9 image format, with most manufacturers offering 18: 9 aspect, and Samsung 18.5: 9. Using this unusual display format, Nubia's design team has got a smartphone with a form closer to the one we've got used to in the last few years, not an elongated one that looks like a "ruler."
ARCHOS Diamond has just two physical buttons on the right. It's Power and Volume. On the left is the slot for nano-SIM cards. This smartphone does not offer a microSD card slot. I would have thought this was a negative point if the model did not have an internal storage capacity of 128 GB. For most users I think this space is enough.
On the bottom edge we find the microphone, USB Type-C port and a mono speaker. The smartphone does not offer a 3.5 mm universal audio jack. Fortunately, ARCHOS has included an adapter for those wishing to use wired headphones in the box. Being a wireless headset user for more than two years, I'm not bothered by the absence of the audio jack, but I can understand why some people feel it lacking. Ironically, the headphones are supplied with a jack.
The fingerprint sensor is positioned on the rear. Because the smartphone is not long and narrow, the reader can easily be accessed by those who do not have very long fingers. The sensor is accurate and unlocks the phone quickly.
The terminal has dual-camera systems on the back and face. The main assembly is 12 MP (f / 1.8) + 23 MP (f / 2.0), assisted by a dual-LED flash. The front panel features two 5 MP (f / 2.2) sensors. Although it does not have optical stabilization, the main camera comes out slightly and there is a risk that the lens will be scratched unless a protective case is used.
Even though the edges have been substantially reduced, I still think there was still room for a Physical Home button that would solve many of the phone interaction issues.
Overall, the smartphone has an attractive design and the quality of the construction is high.
The terminal includes an IPS LCD panel that offers wide viewing angles and has a diagonal of 5.73 "(resolution 1.080 x 2.040 pixels, density 403 ppi). The image format is 17: 9 and provides a screen-to-body ratio of 81.7%.
For a regular user with high-end AMOLED screens, such as Samsung, the maximum brightness of this screen is undesirable. I've also seen much brighter LCD screens like those on Nokia 8 or Huawei P10. The contrast offered by the tested model is good but not spectacular. Moreover, there is a bluish tint on the screen that does not disappear anyway you set the display.
Comparison of screens on different popular smartphone models (Source: GSMArena):
I did not like how the screen automatically adjusts in auto mode. Under any circumstances I used this feature, the brightness was unsatisfactory. That's why I preferred to use my handset brightness manually between 50-60%.
As a conclusion to this chapter, the screen is one that offers average performance.
