BMW has developed a motorcycle that runs alone, with or without the presence of a passenger
A motorcycle that can stay in balance on two wheels even when stationary, starts the engine alone and moves following the traffic signs in the city. The standalone version of the BMW R1200GS works well, even without a passenger, theoretically being able to navigate the streets of cities only with the help of a computer on board
Prepared for the past two years, the first fully autonomous motorcycle is not intended for consumers, as a test platform for technologies for autonomous vehicles and new safety systems
"," says Stefan Hans, engineer for the BMW Motorrad division. " If applicable, we can inform, warn or intervene directly to correct the situation ".
While four-wheel vehicles have received many driving assistance technologies, motorcycles have largely been neglected even though their drivers and passengers are more exposed in the event of accidents. Thus the stand-alone motorcycle will serve to develop new safety systems to assist unattended motorcycle drivers.
