high performance in a compact and light body

Over the past few years I have been pleased to test gaming laptops produced by various renowned manufacturers such as ASUS, Acer or Lenovo. Despite the fact that MSI is an important player on the international market, in Romania it has a strong presence on components rather than on laptops or gaming peripherals. It seems, however, that the Taiwanese manufacturer is planning to increase efforts in this region, now receiving the first MSI test laptop, the GS65 Stealth Thin 8RF, a true ultraportable gaming

Construction, design and ergonomics

I described the GS65 from MSI as an ultraportable as it is one of the smallest gaming laptops on the market. It is built in a way that is not very different from the ASUS Zephyrus or Acer Triton 700 models, and is equipped with a Max-Q high-end graphics chip NVIDIA, which delivers high performance even in a compact format

On the outside, the MSI GS65 Stealth Thin is made almost entirely from matte black aluminum that does not stand out and is not impregnated with all sorts of RGB lights or other design details that distract attention. We have to deal with an elegant laptop whose cover is slashed on the edges. The edges are accentuated with a rose-gold color, like the MSI Gaming logo on the cover. The area around the keyboard is also metallic, but unlike other manufacturers who have made thin gaming laptops, the keyboard is placed in the center of the device and the trackpad below it.

Abnormal slots are positioned above the keyboard, this area becoming very hot during use. But the keypad itself is very interesting. It does not integrate a numpad, but comes with pretty large and well-spaced keys to ensure precision in use, while their race, although not very long, has a satisfactory tactile response. This is backlit with RGB LEDs and benefits from shortcuts for certain functions via the FN button. The trackpad is somewhat more boring, being of medium size (not too small or too big), with mechanical action on the whole surface and compatible with multitouch gestures. It has around it the same golden accents that I have encountered on the cover.

The bottom is largely boring, with only rubber stabilizers and other ventilation slots visible, without upgrading compartments. Basically, to change the RAM or SSD, it is necessary to remove the entire cover.

The screen draws attention immediately due to the very thin frame on three sides, with the bottom much more pronounced. It is covered with a matte material that does not attract unwanted reflections.

Strange, however, is a laptop of about $ 10,000 (or more, depending on the configuration) that it can squeeze when it is handled. It is possible that the test unit was dismantled in the past, as the seal was broken, but even in such situations, a so expensive laptop should be better "wired."

What does not disappoint is the focus on connectivity ports. Gamers have just about everything they want: three 3.1 Type A-Type USB sticks, a Thunderbolt-compatible USB Type-C, a mini DisplayPort, an HDMI 2.0, an Ethernet port and separate headphone jacks and microphone. Perhaps a card reader would also have been necessary for those who want gaming laptops to work in the photo or video industry, but gaming is not such an important component.

MSI seems to have paid more attention to design than we usually encounter for gaming laptops. For example, the lid has a small incision on the top edge to make the laptop easier to open with one hand. Also, the hinge is very solid and always stands in the position where it was placed. Another interesting aspect that we rarely encounter on gaming laptops is that the screen can be folded 180 degrees to a horizontal position
