"I'm not interested in selling"
The largest online store in Romania, eMAG, has expanded in the region from necessity to counteract the big global players, Executive Director Iulian Stanciu told a press conference. The company needs as many customers as possible to get the necessary funds for investment and development. Thus, Dante International's small "empire" reached 7.57 million customers in the region: 4.26 million in Romania, 1.41 million in Hungary, 890.000 in Bulgaria and 304.000 in Poland. The company now has 4,770 employees.
An important player in Central and Eastern Europe has certainly attracted the attention of the West and Orient giants, such as Amazon, JD.com or Tmall. As for Amazon, the company is hiring more and more people at the development center in Romania, but for the time being, it does not indicate that it intends to open a local version, Amazon.ro, of its online store. JD.com in China will expand to the West after receiving a $ 550 million investment from Google.
Asked if he had received a takeover offer from Amazon, Stanciu said he did not receive "any message" from the world's largest online retailer. Other offers have existed over time, but they did not sit down with anyone to discuss. "I'm not interested in selling," he said, at the event where the online retailer's future plans were presented. "We are young and we like what we do, we develop interesting, beautiful things and we want to do this further," added Stanciu.
The retailer invested 63 million euros in four main directions last year to support rapid development as a regional hub of online commerce: employees (2 million), logistics (10 million), technology (27 million) and international development 24 million)
In 2018, eMAG will invest over 120 million euros, including a new deposit near Bucharest, worth 65 million euros. According to Stanciu, this project will generate over 4,000 new jobs in total.
The company announced that it registered a turnover of 4.06 billion lei last year, up 30% compared to last year. Moreover, eMAG has more than 3.4 million products in stock and over 10,000 shops in the Marketplace platform. At the same time, the eMAG application has been installed over 1.1 million times.
