iPhone X may have trouble cracking the glass shield applied to the camera

Treated for increased scratch resistance by applying a sapphire layer, the mineral glass shield installed above the main camera of the iPhone X phones seems to crack in the clear after only a few months of use of the device. Complicating the situation, Apple does not recognize the problem reported by more and more users as a flaw of manufacturing, charging $ 549 to repair the defect outside the warranty.

Also reported by users in tropical climates, the flaw does not seem to be attributed to thermal expansion, as was the case for other smartphone products complained of for similar problems in previous years. Neither the accidental lens hitting hypothesis has too much acceptance, many users strongly argue that they have used protective covers and did not have incidents of this type, observing quite accidentally the problem.

Signed since the onset of the technology, with the launch of the iPhone 7 phones, spontaneous cracking of the sapphire shield over the camera has largely been overlooked, the number of incidents relative to the total volume of iPhone 7 phones delivered to consumers is extremely small.

If on Apple iPhone 7, Apple could blame all unintentional users, the relatively large number of similar incidents reported with the iPhone X and the high cost of repair not covered by the warranty could compromise the image of the most advanced Apple product of the moment.

Difficult to reproduce under laboratory conditions, defect with delayed appearance may be induced to pass through certain stages during the manufacturing process. It is well known that molten glass tends to contract at the time of cooling, the uneven temperature drop can induce some stress in the structure of the material, which will cause violent cracking in the event of additional stress factors (sudden temperature variations, impacts, scratches) . Applied in a controlled manner, the process is used to create secure glass panels and to strengthen the surface for scratch resistance. An eventual mistake in doing these steps could make the finished product more fragile than expected and even lead to cracking of the material.

For the time being, Apple remains with the official position that the reported failure can only come from the user's fault and is therefore not covered by the warranty
