The original Light Phone was a fresh air in a market dominated by increasingly sophisticated smartphones. He suggested returning to the mobile phone that can only initiate and take calls. It seems, however, that the reality of today is different and that users need more than just a receiver, as communication is not much focused on the voice. Light Phone 2 does not deviate very much from the original concept, but it offers some more functionality, such as the ability to send messages, set alarms, and connect to the internet
In fact, Light Phone 2 is a smartphone disguised in a small and simplistic housing. At its core lies an Android-based operating system called LightOS, which is pushed back by a Qualcomm MSM8909W processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage and antennas for WiFi, GPS and 4G. All these are integrated into a slightly thicker body than a credit card (91 x 55 x 6.5-7.5 mm), which also includes a 500 mAh battery, a USB Type-C port, speakerphone and call microphone, proximity sensor and high-resolution touchscreen e-ink screen
In the functionality chapter, Light Phone 2 exceeds the original model by adding SMS, saving contacts and setting an alarm. Functions such as displaying weather status, voice commands, a computer, dictionary, music playback, and navigation are taken into account, but implementation is not guaranteed before launch. There is also the possibility of partnering with Uber or Lyft for ridesharing services. Basically, Light Phone 2 will be able to do just like everything a modern smartphone does, but with no unrestricted internet access. E-mail, Instant Messaging, Store applications and Browsing are completely against the idea behind this device.
Light Company launched an Indiegogo campaign to fund production, which aimed to raise $ 250,000. This has already been overcome, with a single device costing US $ 250 during fundraising. The final version is going to cost $ 400. The launch is scheduled for April 2019.
