The first smartphone made by RED, which until recently was exclusively known for its professional video cameras, will debut in 2018, but so far we have not received much detail about it. I knew it was equipped with the first "holographic" display on the market and could be used as an accessory for RED cinemas, but I did not know much about what hardware was inside or when it was released. However, RED employees are willing to talk about the phone just before the phone is officially unveiled.
RED Hydrogen One will only be launched in the summer of 2018, and it seems that it is already planned to launch alongside US telecom operators, something that is not just a habit for a new smartphone market player. The phone has a list price of between 1,200 and 1,500 dollars without a contract, so it is likely that the availability in the offer of the operators will ensure a reduced price and exposure to a wider public
In the hardware chapter, the handset will benefit from a 5.7 "QHD resolution with a holographic panel that can transition from one mode to another. Normal mode will display brighter images, while the holographic mode (called RED "4V") will display 3D images that can be seen without glasses, but this mode will have a low brightness. Other interesting features are the 4,500 mAh battery, the Snapdragon 835 chipset (it looks like it will not benefit from the new 845, which is coming out soon), a headphone jack, two SIM card holder and a microSD slot
Of course, RED Hydrogen One will not have a huge impact on the smartphone market, being a phone dedicated to a user-definable group, shooting enthusiasts, or already RED camera users. The fact that the phone can be used as a 3D glasses without glasses will at least ensure the sale to some 3D movie studios, which can be used as a display by using the magnetic connector on the back with a camcorder.
