Oculus Rift outperformed HTC Vive among Steam users

The virtual reality devices HTC Vive and Oculus Rift came to market around the same time and tried to attract the same audience: gamers interested in the latest technology trends. While neither device was sold as expected, after nearly two years on the market, one of these seems to be "winner" in the other's territory. Oculus Rift is now the most popular virtual reality headset among Steam users

Oculus Rift comes with the proprietary Oculus Home platform, where dedicated headset games are launched exclusively. Of course, Oculus users can also play steam games using the headset, with many manufacturers including compatibility in HTC Vive games and the Facebook solution. However, considering that HTC Vive is the 100% Compatible Valve device with Steam VR platform, it's weird to see Oculus Rift ranked first in Steam's VR device

The reasons why Oculus made this advance are multiple. First, the Rift + accessories package is cheaper by 200 dollars / euro than the HTC solution, and as a result, the performance of the device is weaker. However, there is more interest from Oculus VR in partnering with game developers to produce exclusive content for Rift, adding extra value to the user. Last but not least, HTC has already announced a "Pro" version of Vive, many of those who were interested in buying a headset from this range, probably expecting the launch of the new generation and the inevitable cheapness of the old one. So far, HTC Vive has steered the top of the VR systems on Steam

In February, however, Oculus Rift reached a market share of 47.31% of those who participated in the survey, followed by Vive with 45.38%. On the third place are all Windows Mixed Reality devices with 5.36% and finally the Oculus Rift DK2, a beta version launched two years before the final model arrives on the market

It is important to note that not all users on Steam participate in the hardware configuration survey
