The classical rivalry AMD vs. Intel seems to be turning into a race with three competitors, Qualcomm entering into the game with its first PC-developed processor

Having first experimented, adapting a chipset originally designed for high end laptops for laptop systems, Qualcomm raised the relay by launching a chipset designed from the very beginning for the format of laptop systems. Accepting the compromise of a slightly increased energy consumption, Snapdragon 1000 delivers performance at the low-power Intel Core processors

Qualcomm's solution is a fully-equipped SoC (System-on-Chip) package, 20 x 15 mm package, integrating a multi-core CPU based on the Cortex-A76 high-performance core, the latest generation GPU and a rich repertoire of connectivity options .

The 12W chip can be installed on motherboards with compatible socket, just like the Intel and AMD processors. Depending on the particularities of the device, it may be passively cooled, or by means of a fan.

The new chipset Snapdragon 1000 chipset will run an edition of Windows 10 adapted for ARM processors, but the x86 emulation technologies already provided by Microsoft should ensure good compatibility with popular PC applications

The reference design provided by Qualcomm provides all the expected features from a modern laptop: Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, Wi-Fi AC and even support for mobile internet connections. Within the budget range, new portables will have up to 16GB of RAM and can be configured with two storage modules, each with a capacity of 128GB

Although it is disadvantaged by the lack of native support for x86 applications, the SDM1000 chipset could threaten the Intel and AMD monopoly on the PC platform. So far, Qualcomm does not provide accurate performance figures, but the allegations we have already made reveal that the Cortex-A76 core is up to 35% more than the solution used with the Snapdragon 850. Given the vehemence with which Intel criticized the collaboration between Qualcomm and Microsoft and even trying to block the adaptation of the Snapdragon 835 chipset for use with Windows 10 devices, accusing the violation of several patented technologies, we can rest assured that the Intel camp is not at all delighted with the progress of the new rival
