With design inspired by the Samsung Galaxy S8, the UMIDIGI S2 manages to convince with good quality finishes applied to a well-matched metal case, the 5.99 "sharp shader and 5100 mAh battery capable of offer up to 4 days of worry-free use

Presentation

If 2-3 years ago we're still amazed by the Asian manufacturers' attempts to deliver competitive price / smartphone models, the result being invariably products with disappointing performance that overheat in normal use and bend into the pocket at the first wrong move, the situation is now considerably better. Yes, we still find mediocre products that attract buyers displaying an extravagant design, just to disappoint the experience later on. But we have even more exceptions, such as UMIDIGI S2

Delivered in an exclusive metallic glass front cover with Gorilla Glass 4 glass, UMIDIGI S2 is easy to use everyday. The black-matt paint layer does not scratch on contact with slightly abrasive surfaces and masks the traces left by sweaty palms quite well. The truly pleasant surprise is the oleophobic layer that allows easy finger slip on the screen, simple to clean and which masks quite well the ambient reflections. The solid case does not crack and does not flex under moderate pressure. However, strong kicks or pressures should be avoided on the back cover, which is not so thick and could be deformed to tougher contact with some objects, such as the corner of the table. The only aspect that draws less attention to detail is the noise produced by the Power / Volume keys when we pass the finger over them, caused by their "play" in the body of the casing

The UMIDIGI S2 is delivered with a "clean" version of Android 6.0.1, with AOSP interface and a small set of pre-installed Google applications, leaving the user with complete freedom to personalize the device. Unfortunately, besides security patches, there is little chance of getting an update to a newer version of Android, MediaTek, the manufacturer of the Helio P20 (MT6757) chipset refusing to provide the necessary software support. Fortunately, after applying all of the available smarts, the current version of Android has demonstrated a convincing level of performance and impeccable stability.

The 4G LTE Terminal benefits from dual-band Wi-Fi N connectivity and a very fast fingerprint sensor

The equipment list continues with a dual camera system, consisting of a 13MP + 5MP F2.0 PDAF, the latest IMX258 sensor, the latter responsible for the application of artistic effects to the obtained images

Above the screen we find a 5MP front camera, optimized for portrait pictures and low light conditions. In a less inspired decision, UMIDIGI placed the Notification LED under the grille for the audio headset, its visibility being rather problematic

Unfortunately, the headphone output is not part of the list of accessories, but the manufacturer offers a 3.5-mm USB-C adapter, which we can add to traditional wired headphones

The bottom-facing USB-C connector allows you to charge the 5100 mAh battery in less than three hours, with an eye-catching performance. Fully charged, it promises approximately four days of moderate use, or at least two days of intensive use

In the 186-gram case, the UMIDIGI S2 has a pretty strong configuration with 2.34GHz octa-core CPU and 4GB of RAM. Powered by the 16nm manufacturing process, the MediaTek Helio P20 chip has proven to be energy efficient enough, providing a screen time of about 5 hours and a half, divided over four days. It has to be said that this result was achieved with the brightness of the screen set to a comfortable level for use in confined spaces and keeping the data and Wi-Fi connection active

The device is helped with a generous amount of 4GB of RAM, more than enough for the used OS and common Android apps. With 64 GB, the internal memory can be upgraded by up to 256GB by attaching a microSD card instead of one of the two SIM cards
